The children at Forest Schools are invited to explore their environment and to notice the changes we see weekly during our trips to the forest as part of caring for their environments.
On this occasion the children were quick to see that the trees were missing their leaves and could be found on the forest floor. With many children choosing to collect leaves we discussed the differences and similarities that could be found in the leaves. We made patterns with the leaves that were similar in colour, and sorted leaves by size.
We then practiced fine motor skills of threading as the children made an Autumn tree to take home from the forest with the leaves they had each chosen.
It was lovely to see the uniqueness of each child's tree, as they had specifically collected leaves which were of interest to themselves.
The children finished their trees by using a hammer and nails to stick their tree into a log slice which supported it to stand.
